Year after year, century after century they set out to fish in the distant, cold and hostile waters of the North Atlantic. They went because these seas were rich - rich in cod. This is the story of the great cod fishing saga.
In this first episode: Cod a "strategic" fish. Conservation techniques. The dried-cod trade and commercial routes: Spain, Portugal and the Mediterranean. The salt trade: Spain & Portugal

The church maintained social cohesion through blessings, processions, charities. Before the departure of the fishing fleets there were the "pardons": religions gatherings covering up a commercial pretext.
