Forgotten for many years because of their obvious connections with colonisation, Africanist paintings are in the process of being "rediscovered" and exhibited.
Those white artists who travelled to Black Africa at the end of the nineteenth century were totally inspired by it's difference, by the colour of the skin, the sensuality and the grace of its people. Their paintings, displayed during the great European exhibitions at the turn of the century, gave a glimpse of a little known culture to a fascinated public.
We are touched today by the simple and caring attention that we feel when contemplating these works of art.
